Non-Violence
History
Back then, India was taken over by the British. The British were like dictators, they took supplies from India and re-made the goods into new things, and they made the Indians buy them. This way, it is an advantange to the British and a disadvantage to the Indians. The Indians wanted to break free from the British, but they didn't know how. Mahatma Gandhi stepped up and took control. He refused violence, one of his famous quotes was : "An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind." Gandhi was born on October 2nd, 1869, in Porbandar, Kathiawar, West India,British India. He was India's Nationalist leader. He was a pioneer of Satyagraha, and he became of the political and spiritual leaders of India. Gandhi went back to India in 1419. He supported the Home Rule movement, and was made leader of the Indian National Congress to accomplish independence without using violence.Gandhi did many great things, he did them without violence. There was a salt march(388 km/241 mi), a fasting to threaten to die, but his work was not always appreciated. He was sent to jail/ prison, and the British detested him. Gandhi dies on January 30th, 1948. He died as a hero, freeing India from the British.
The Salt March
Gandhi and the Indians didn't want to buy the salts that the British made them buy. They created a "boycott" marching all the way to the sea where they made their own salt. This is one example of the non-violent rebellion.
