History - Sangham and Post Sangham
'Sanghams' were group of poets that exist in various parts of Pandiyan Empire. The main goal of Sanghams was to encourage poetic arts. A Roman-Greek sailor called Heppalus reached Musiris (Kodungalloore) in A.D. 45, and this enabled Kerala to trade with the Roman Empire. Around 50 - 125 A.D. the Chera Kings took some parts of northern Kerala, Kerala has traded with the West (strong). IN A.D. 52, St. Thomas reached Kerala and Christianity is brought to Kerala. 216 A.D. is kwown as 'Parasurama period', 216 A.D. to 428 A.D. is kwown as 'Perumals'. Cheran Chenguttuvan is a famous ruler of Kerala.
History - Kulasekara Periods
Then after the Sangham, the Kulasekara Kings came in power in Kerala. The Kulasekara Kings beginning from 800A.D. for 3 centuries, also known as 'Second Chera' empire. Many changes and starts started during this period, for example the Kolla Varsha or the Quilon Calendar (Malayalam Calendar system) came into existence on 25th of July , 825 A.D. Cities were also reconstructed during this time of rule. In 1070 Kerala was free from Chola control. After the Kulasekara periods, the provincial rulers came and took control.
History - Europeans (British) Rule to Independence
In 1498, Vasco da Gama reached Kappad (near Kozhikode), this made a start and many more Europeans start arrving. Although at first the Europeans' main thing to is to trade and discover but later on they wanted to gain administration (control). They slowly gain their control in Kerala. The Portuguese were the first Europeans to have control in Kerala, but then other Europeans also wanted to gain administration so then the Dutch in 1604 and the British in 1725 came in. The Portuguese and Dutch fought a lot of wars and battles and slowly, the Portuguese begin losing control over the Dutch. After a while, the French also came in and set their base but in Mahe.
For the next 200 years, the British have control of Kerala,India beacause they were interested in Kerala too. Some small revolts came up but the British can easily and quickly put an end to it because the provinces were lacking unity, they were not unite. During its rule, Kerala moderized itself because the British builded bridges, abolished slavery, etc...
In 1900, many more revolts and battles fight for independence from the British rule. During World War 2, the British loss a lot of power and the Indians are starting to unite themselves under Mahatma Gandhi in 1925. Then, after struggling, Kerala gained independence from the British colonial rule. On November 1, 1956, Kerala became kwown as a state.
