AMRITSAR
HISTORY
Amritsar got it’s name from Amrit Sarovar, a tank that surrounds the Golden Temple. Amritsar means “the pool of nectar” the name came from a pool made at the sacred site in the 16th century, made by the Mughal Emperor Akbar to Guru Ramdas, the 4th instructor of Sikh faith. From instruction of Guru Amar Das Sahib, the city was found by Guru Ram Das Sahib in 1574. Later, he built his residence and moved to Amritsar. Guru Ram Das Sahib began the digging of the Amritsar Sarovar (Tank) in 1577. This process took 4 years and was ready by 1581. This tank was then fixed by Guru Arjun Sahib.
The Mogul chief of Patti tried to take over Amritsar several times. One of those times was made in April 1709. The Sikhs repelled this attack under the command of Bhai Mani SIngh and Bhai Tra Singh of Dall-Wan. However, after Baba Banda Singh Bahadur conquered several places in Punjab, Bhai Mani Singh was afraid and left Amritsar so he would be able to avoid the Mogul attacks.
THE AMRITSAR MASSACRE
This massacre happened on April 13th, 1919. In the afternoon of that day, about ten thousand people gathered in a garden in the city of Amritsar. The people were there to protest peacefully against the arrest of leaders in the Indian National Congress. Since it was suppose to be a peaceful protest, no one was armed with any weapons. Edward Dyer - a British general ordered his people to open fire at the innocent group of people. Jallianwala Bagh, the garden was designed with one narrow gate. General Dyer told his soldiers to stay at the only gate of Jallianwala Bagh and commanded them to fire on the Indian crowd. Nearly four hundred people died and thousands were badly injured. This event led to the Indian Freedom. But, that day of the massacre in Amritsar is a terryifying memory.
