Brief History of the City
Allahabad Fort, a famous tourist attraction in Allahabad.
The city of Allahabad, which is located near the Ganges River, is an extremely unique city that you are sure to love as soon as you get there. Before it was named Allahabad, the city was named Prayag, or Prathisthana, and was ruled by 'Chandrawashi' kings. It was known that people even willingly sacrificed themselves in order to obtain salvation and purification of the soul, which was a very common religious practice. Also, legend has it that the Lord Brahma, the creator of everything, chose Allahabad as a land for 'Prakrishta Yajna'.
Allahabad is famous not only for its beautiful attractions, but also that the famous Mughal ruler, Akbar, visited Prayag during his reigning period and founded the city of Illahabad, which is now known as Allahabad. It became the 'provincial capital' during the period of the Mughal reign as well. To show this significant importance, Akbar Fort was constructed, and is still a major tourist attraction today. Also, the capital has once been moved from Agra to Allahabad.
Then, there is the period of British colonialism. Allahabad became a large center of the struggle for freedom, and even now, it is still shaping the future of the country of India today.

Exploring the City
A festival in the city center
Allahabad is a fantastic city to explore, and has many special places you would love to go to. If you're a fan of historical sites, Allahabad is the perfect place. Many tourist attractions were founded a long time ago, some even when the Mughal emperors were in reign of the country. These kinds of places include Akbar Fort, Patalpuri Temple, Ashoka Pillar, and Allahabad Fort etc.
If you like festivals and cultural activities, you're also in for a treat. Religious festivals are common in the city of Allahabad. The many religions in India lead to a colorful, broad amount of festivals and other cultural activities. These include the Magh Mela, the Kumbh Mela, the Ardh Kumbh Mela, the Dussehra, the Ganga Water Raily (an event that includes water sports), the Triveni Mahotsava, and many more.
You might want to be aware of something that everyone experiences at one point or another when visiting a new place: culture shock. You should be careful of pickpockets in crowded areas, and bandits. However, Allahabad is a wonderful place, despite those slight misfortunes. The people are very friendly overall, and extremely kind.
The climate in Allahabad is rather warm, so the suggested clothing you bring are light, cotton clothing, for example, T-shirts and shorts. Other objects suggested are water, a camera, and a small strap-bag that you can strap onto your waist to prevent getting something valuable stolen. Also, bringing comfortable shoes that fit and are suitable for walking long distances is a good option too!
